As you may be aware, a fire in the Croatan National Forest prompted the closure of the Newport Transfer Station around noon today (4/23). As a reminder, the Newport Transfer Station is located within the Croatan National Forest. At this time, the fire does not pose a direct threat to the facility; however, the access road is currently unsafe for travel, and we are following U.S. Forest Service directions regarding access to the area.
For Friday, April 24, we will meet with the U.S. Forest Service and fire officials early in the morning to determine whether the Newport Transfer Station can safely reopen at its regular time of 7:30 a.m. Updates will be provided as soon as possible via our website (www.cepnc.org), our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/CoastalEnvironmentalPartnership), and by direct email.
The Tuscarora Landfill and Grantsboro Transfer Station will operate under normal hours (7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) on both Friday and Saturday.
